Habitica: Turn Your To-Do List Into an RPG

Habitica: Turn Your To-Do List Into an RPG

Introduction

Habitica is a habit tracker that treats your life as a role-playing game. You list your habits, daily tasks and to-dos; a pixel-art avatar gains experience and gold when you do them and loses health when you don't. It started in 2013 as HabitRPG, is open source under GPL-3.0, and runs free on the web, iOS and Android. This article covers what makes the game layer work, and how to set it up so it helps rather than nags.

Value proposition

  • Skipping costs something. Once a day, at an hour you choose, every Daily you missed takes health from your avatar; at zero you lose a level, your gold and a piece of gear. Small, recoverable — but "do I feel like it?" becomes "do I want to take the hit?"
  • Doing pays. Habits, Dailies and To-Dos earn XP and gold; gold buys gear, pets, or the real-world Rewards you set yourself. One difficulty dial per task sets what it pays and costs.
  • Friends share the damage. In a party quest the boss only weakens when members finish their Dailies, and hits everyone when someone skips. A private lapse becomes a small social debt, automatically.
  • Enough game to stay interesting. Four classes from level 10, 100+ pets and mounts, seasonal gear — none of it changes what you do, only which numbers go up.
  • Know the limits. Not a project manager; the economy runs thin after a few dozen levels; and if losing HP turns into guilt, "Rest in the Inn" pauses the damage.

Instructions

  • Get it. Browser at habitica.com; apps on the App Store and Google Play. Source on GitHub (GPL-3.0). Everything above is free; the optional Habitica Plus subscription (US$4.99/month or $47.99/year) is cosmetic and support-only — it buys gems and exclusive gear, not productivity features.
  • Start small. The community's standard advice: three Habits and one Daily on day one. The cron is unforgiving in proportion to how much you promised it; add the second Daily when the first has become boring.
  • Set the cron hour. Settings → Site → Custom Day Start. Night owls should push it past midnight so a task done at 1 a.m. still counts for "today".
  • Join a party early. Social → Party, or invite friends by username; then pick a quest from the Quests tab. Public guilds and the community wiki are the best places to find one if you don't have friends on it.
  • Going away? Tavern → "Rest in the Inn" pauses Daily damage until you check out.
